Cool down sketch

Like a lot of us, at the end of the day I try to sketch something quick just to relax before going to bed. But sometimes I get carried away and my girlfriend and my cat wonder where the heck did I go.
Here's one of those times.

New Boards

A few years ago, an Oscar(TM)-nominated director told me that for maximum results I should post things on Social media on a tuesday-Wednesday, not on the weekend when everyone is minding their own business. And so, showing that I am really good at understanding things, here I am posting some storyboards on a Friday! Yay!

These are a few of the rough boards for "Magic&Machines", a project by the incredibly talented Nathan Thomas.
You can find a teaser for the show here: https://youtu.be/KPC_4P0_PF4

I hope you enjoy!

Comic Book in progress

Comics have always been a constant in my life.
As a kid growing up in Italy every shelf in my bedroom was overrun by super-heroes, manga and bandes dessinées (my mom was ECSTATIC). In fact, I learned english reading "Hulk" and french with "Asterix".

Drawing comics, on the other hand, has always been a dream, and lately I've decided to give it a try.
My brother is way too busy to write a short story to illustrate for me, and so I did what any sane person would do... I asked  Reddit for a script.

Of all the submissions I was sent by Reddit writers I picked a Spaghetti Western one and started sketching. Here's the two main characters.

"What If..." Animation Review

It's a bit awkward to highlight positive reviews of something you've worked on. But definitely working as one of the Animation Directors on "What If..." has been the highlight of my career (sorry, "Monster Trucks"!)Here are some screenshots from a "What If..." Episode 3 review that specifically mentions  animation quality. I am really proud of the work the team has done on it!

This week one of the "Marvel Studios  What If" episodes I worked on as Animation Director will come out. I hope you enjoy it.

The team worked hard on it and, personally speaking, it was an honor to spend time under Stephan Frank's supervision. Stephan is a true genius and every review session was a masterclass in animation and storytelling.
You can find Stephan's website here:https://www.stephanfranck.com/

Experiments...

A few days ago I bought a Re:Markable 2 tablet.
Being E-ink, there's no strain on the eye, which -working every day with 2-3 screens, like probably you do- is pretty awesome. It has a super simple interface and what you can do is limited, but I quite enjoy it, and it forces you to be a bit Zen, which I also find interesting. Below you can see a samurai warm-up doodle from a few days ago.

Later I imported the sketch in Photoshop and started playing around with it. I feel a bit bored by how realistic and 4-6-8K all pictures have become. The perfection of digital images takes away a lot of mystery and I am quite interested in "de-perfect" things a bit and see if I can recapture the feeling I had as a kid watching grainy cartoons. Whether the final project will be a short  or a comic, I am not sure, but I am definitely going to explore this idea more.

Sci-Fi Fashion  Mood Board

8/8/2021

A while back I was asked to collaborate on a sci-fi movie project based on an existing property. I was supposed to board a couple of test sequences, explore different post-production looks, and then direct live-action mo-cap actors for a few days. A dream!
Unfortunately at the last moment the financing fell through and last I heard the project will be completely re-tooled.
So here's a tiny bit -what I can share- of the work I did on it.

The basic idea here is that, while I am definitely not a fashion-forward person (just ask my poor girlfriend), I strongly feel embracing fashion could really help make science fiction projects look fresh and eye-catching.

Below you'll find a quick moodboard and a sketch of the main character's jacket. It was supposed to change color with the mood of the character...

Well, hello there! A few days ago, after a long time away from my website, I logged in again and realized a lot of my art and posts had suddenly disappered.
Oops.

Well, no biggie, it's the perfect excuse to start refreshing the whole presentation. I'll also start posting some recent photos and sketches of what I've been up to.

Can't wait! Hope to see you around :)

The Animation Workshop

In March I moved to Viborg, Denmark to teach animation at one of the best schools in the world, The Animation Workshop. During my 4 and a half weeks  there I was blessed with some incredibly talented students. Here's a selection of some of the drawings (the PG-13 ones) they made for me.
